No Back No Year Back: As AKTU start CBCS in University 2016-17

Tired of relentless protests by students failing in the exam, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University has decided to pass everyone by introducing the choice-based credit system (CBCS) from academic session 2016-17. With CBCS, no marks will be awarded to students in any of the semesters. Instead, students will have to score a minimum number of credits each semester. The move will benefit over 4 lakh students studying in more than 400 colleges of AKTU.

University pro vice-chancellor VK Singh said, "With CBCS, there will be no 'year back' and all students will be allowed to go through the next semester. We are not failing the students but ensuring that students clear their papers in a longer duration." He added that students can attend summer classes to complete their credits. Till now, if a AKTU student failed in four out of 10 subjects in a year, he was declared having a 'year back' and was not promoted.

Credit defines the quantum of content or syllabus prescribed for a course. It may be in the form of a unit prescribed for a course and is determined by the number of hours of instruction required per week. The new format makes it compulsory for each student to score minimum of 23 credits per semester. If a student is unable to secure the minimum credits, they will be promoted to the next semester and given a chance to obtain the remaining credits of first semester along with the minimum credits for second semester. This process, explained officials, will continue for all eight semesters. At the end of four years, if a student has still not completed the total minimum credits, he will be given three years to complete the course. CBCS will comprise two kinds of courses: core and elective. There will be a core course in every semester which would be compulsory for a student to study to earn a degree. The elective course can be chosen from a pool of papers. These courses will support the discipline of study. On Wednesday, the university also decided to end the general proficiency marks allotted to students for participation in extra-curricular activities and maintaining discipline. while their stay in the college.

"The purpose of general proficiency was defeated. There was no objectivity but favouritism by the teachers in awarding marks for general proficiency," said Singh.
All colleges affiliated to AKTU have been instructed to complete the process of branch change by August 30.
